Last week, EU countries agreed to a proposal from the European Commission to allow the mealworm to be used as food for humans.
This means that the dried yellow mealworm can now be used as a food.
The protein-rich creature can be consumed as a snack but also in powder form in food products such as rusks, biscuits and pastas.
This should be clearly stated on the packaging.
Insects are already widely eaten all over the world, they contain important proteins that benefit our health.
The UN organization FAO recommends them as healthy, nutritious and rich in fats, proteins, vitamins, fiber and minerals.
In addition to being healthy, they are also less harmful to the environment and climate than beef, for example.
The approval of the mealworm fits well with the new Brussels projects such as the ‘green deal’ (for a better climate policy) and the ‘farm-to-fork’ strategy.
Insects multiply quickly, do not need water or fertile agricultural land and help to reduce food waste.
